How to Write to a College Coach – Instructions and Example Letter
It is very important to know how to properly communicate with a college coach via email. One
of the best ways to get a coach’s attention before a college tournament is to write an email
expressing your desire to have them watch your games.
REMEMBER – some of these coaches will receive hundreds of emails before tournaments, so
you need to make sure you write a letter that gives them all the information they need to know
about you, but also shows them you did a little research on their college and program. You also
don’t want to make the email too long, keep it to the point of about 2 small paragraphs
followed by a list of your schedule, player information, and contact information.
What Needs to be in the EMAIL?
- A couple sentences about you (general info about family high school etc…)
- Some general information about the college and program you are writing
- Your Specific Team (So Cal Elite FC, 07 Discovery) BE SPECIFIC!!
- Your Game Schedule (dates/times) for the Tournament
- Your Jersey Number
- Your Position – don’t put more than 2
- Your High School Graduation year (2024)
- Your contact information – Email and Phone
- Your High School GPA
- Your Club Coaches Contact Information
You can always add a few others things, but the stuff listed is non-negotiable
Below is a sample letter on the types of emails that I receive just about every day. You don’t have to make your email exactly like this example, but It can help give you a good start!
If you need more help with this, feel free to contact me directly and I can walk you through how to email
a coach.
Hello Coach Taylor,
My name is Frida Murrieta and I am interested in playing soccer at CBU. I see your team is
having a good season, and I have enjoyed watching them play both in person and on ESPN. I
truly believe CBU could be a great fit for me athletically and academically and I am anxious to
learn more about the university. I have always wanted to be a Kinesiology major and I know
CBU has one of the top programs in the country.
I wanted to reach out to let you know that my team is playing in the upcoming College Soccer
